Why Use a Mountain Bicycle?

A bicycle, also known as a bicycle or road bicycle, is usually a single-wheeled or pedal-controlled, motorized, bicycle with two wheels connected to a fixed frame at the rear wheel. A bicycle rider is commonly known as a bicycle rider, or biker. Bicyclists may also use a two-wheel "mop" bike, sometimes known as an urban bicycle, and some people also refer to two-wheel scooters, sometimes called a moped, which are basically similar to and are powered by the same types of bicycles. A number of countries allow bicycle riders to ride on freeways and expressways with restrictions on highway riding.

Most bicycles have a single pedal, a freewheel, on the left side of the seat, normally near the center of the seat. The pedals are seldom used on recreational bikes and are used mostly for racing and touring bikes. Touring bikes generally have pedals attached to the back wheel on the left side.

Pedals provide smooth, economical riding. When pedaling a bicycle with both feet on the ground, the bicycle loses momentum when it is stopped and slows down because the muscles that provide the force to keep the bicycle's wheels traveling have been shortened. In other words, as the bicycle slows, so do the pedals. This is also true for coasting. Most bicycles have a gear shift, or shifter, that allows you to change gears without stopping the bicycle. Most bicycles have a chain guide, or brake caliper, that lets you know if the rear wheel is in line with the pedals for a safe and smooth ride.

The seat of a bicycle is designed for comfortable comfort and ease of use. It is not wide nor flat; it is shaped to give the maximum convenience to the rider. The bicycle seat has two major components: the pegs and the handlebars. The pegs are mounted on top of the seat, next to the seat rails. These provide secure and comfortable mounting positions.

The handlebars, which rest next to the pegs, allow the rider to make a more complete and comfortable ride. The handlebar is mounted above the pedals, allowing the riders to take their feet off the pedal for hands free, relaxed ride. A typical mountain bicycle has a front wheel that has a bigger diameter than the back wheel. The larger diameter front wheel makes it easier for a rider to roll smoothly over rougher terrain.

Mountain bicycles typically have longer top tube lengths. These long tubes enable the rider to stay in a more relaxed position while the pedals are in motion. Other popular styles of bicycles often have shorter top tube lengths to enable the rider to pedal faster, which may benefit some users but may increase the likelihood of accidents due to leaning on the pedals.
